Velocity

Goal: 20 mph top speed

Procedure Summary

To acquire maximum velocity data, the car was brought up to its maximum speed (the throttle completely open) and the car was timed over a 30 foot distance. The resultant time and known distance was used to calculate the velocity. This test was repeated several times to ensure accuracy. Unfortunately, a set screw in the gear-train came out on the seventh trial.

Acceleration

Goal: Reach top speed in less than 7 seconds

Procedure Summary

To test the car's acceleration, a smartphone app titled "SpeedClock" was used to collect data. This app allows the user to enter a known velocity, and start a timer that stops when the known velocity is reached. For this test, the smartphone was attached to the car. Simultaneously, the timer on the app was started as the car began to accelerate to its average maximum velocity (8.7 mph). The time recorded from the app were the direct results of this test.
